Style & inspiration to make a wonderful home

Our history

For over 30 years, Karla Edis has been at the forefront of quality interior design. With husband, Martin, daughter, Belle, and designer Louise. They delight in the creative process of transforming your living space. The Watlington Workroom is ably run by Caroline and Sam.

Karla Edis began her design career in 1978. After having her daughter, Belle, she began working part–time at an interior design shop in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, making lampshades and cushions for the store. She had always shown skill in sewing and she soon progressed to making curtains for clients. Naturally, that involved helping them to make fabric and style choices, and there she excelled, demonstrating a real flair for understanding and interpreting her clients’ styles and advising them on the colours, textures and designs that would best complement each other.

A move to Brightwell Baldwin then followed, and Karla and husband, Martin, who ran the Menswear department at Harrods, decided to go into business together. They first opened their doors in May 1983, designing and making curtains in the back room of the shop.

Such was the shop’s success that in 1989 Martin resigned from Harrods to devote his time to the design business. They expanded into the workroom in Watlington’s High Street, giving them the space and freedom to create their inspirational designs.

Today, Drapes design team comprises Karla, her daughter Belle, who has been with the business for eighteen years, Louise, Caroline and Sam. And the same passion and enthusiasm inspires the business 32 years on as it has done from the start.
